David Hockney Joiner Questions

  • What is important when capturing movement with a camera for a joiner type of composition?
    • It is important for the photographer not to move, lest they capture different perspectives and distort the image.
  • How do joiners give the illusion of time and space?
    • Each photograph only captures a split second of time, but a joiner captures many different points of time, and thus allows a story to be told. The layout of the pictures within the joiner creates a larger picture of a ‘space’ throughout the segment of time.
  • How is physically arranging the photographs like arranging the photographs in Photo Shop?
    • Each photograph is essentially a layer that can be overlaid upon another.
  • What are some pros and cons of Photo Shop joiners vs. physically printing and joining the images?
    • Photoshop allows the photographer to adjust each layer separately. In other words, different effects can be applied to the layers quite easily. Photoshop also doesn’t require expensive prints and film development.
  • Do you prefer the very ‘organized and exact’ style or more ‘broken up’ style of joiner? Why?
    • I prefer the more organized an exact style of joiner, because they give the impression that more thought was given into the layout of the pictures, however if time is broken up, the image will contain more “depth.”
